Visit Algarve history and culture

Discover the history and culture of the Algarve.

Discover the history and culture of the Algarve. The five hundred years (from the 8th to the 13th century) of Moorish presence in Al Gharb, which is Arabic for “to the west”, left a strong legacy and it was also in the Algarve, mainly in the areas of Lagos and Sagres, that Príncipe Henrique, the Navigator, the main architect of the Portuguese Discoveries, left testimony to the glorious times and conquests of the 15th century.

From Vilamoura, we can recommend several excursions for a different day!

A tour of the Eastern Algarve, passing through Faro, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. In Faro, be sure to visit the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Old Town, including the Cathedral and the Castle. In Tavira, discover fantastic beaches and islands, climb to the castle for fantastic views of the ocean and be amazed by regional handicrafts. In Vila Real de Santo António, right on the border with Spain, stroll through Praça Marquês de Pombal and the riverside area and try one of the many local restaurants.

Another suggestion is a tour of the mountain and west coast, exploring Silves, Monchique and Aljezur. This tour has as its first stop Silves, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, where it is worth visiting the Castle, built by the Moors on Roman foundations in the 11th century, the Cathedral and the Arade River Dam. Then travel to Monchique, located on the mountain that separates the Algarve from the Alentejo and where you can find the highest point in the Algarve. The route ends in Aljezur, where in addition to the Castle and the Misericórdia Church, you can find beautiful beaches on the west coast of Portugal.

The options are very varied for trips to discover the Algarve!

Wine tasting

Savor the best wines from the Algarve region.

Did you know that the Algarve has been a demarcated region since 1980 and that it produces red, white, rosé and liqueur wines? The vineyards in this region are exposed to more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year.

If you want to know more about wine production in the Algarve, we suggest a guided visit to Silves, one of the oldest cities in Portugal. Currently, this inland city has a well-preserved historical heritage and includes eight wine producers. On this half-day visit for wine lovers, you will visit a wine producer and participate in tastings, accompanied with regional cheese and chorizo.
